Ayurveda is an ancient system of healing that incorporates the mindful observation of self and the intricate relational dance we do with the manifest world. Ayurveda acknowledges the importance of environment, seasonal influences, and the actions we take to nourish our sensory reality.

The daily choices we make to eat certain foods and engage in various lifestyle activities at particular times can enhance one’s sense of being centered in the self. From this place of awareness, Ayurvedic wisdom enkindles the spirit’s inclination towards healing and growth.

Although Ayurveda originates in India, I embrace the concept of bio-regional Ayurveda. This means that I look to the specific environment and bio-regional culture an individual belongs to and create my recommendations from that understanding. While I also use herbs and foods that come from India, I do my best to consider the local environment, plants, and resources available, regionally and with respect to an individual’s culture.

More About Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine, originating in ancient India, that addresses body, mind, and spirit.

Ayurveda is a comprehensive method of healing that offers complete diet and lifestyle guidance. The teachings of Ayurveda enhance one’s well being by promoting a healthy relationship with nature. Ayurveda teaches us to observe the movements of the seasons, environmental changes, and our surroundings to make choices that support health and longevity. Modern food and lifestyle habits largely ignore the interconnectedness of our bodies to the rhythms of nature which can result in various imbalances. By applying Ayurvedic principles to our lives, we can find our center once again.

Like many wisdom traditions the world over, Ayurveda is an elemental system. It acknowledges that all things in the manifest world are made up of the five elements, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. Our bodies are also made of these elements which form pairs, or in Sanskrit, Doshas which are Vata (Air and Space), Pitta (Fire and Water) and Kapha (Water and Earth.) Our bodies are made of these three doshas in unique combinations, resulting in our constitution. For example, if you have a predominance of Earth and Water in your body from birth, you can understand Kapha dosha is significant for you. Sometimes, over a period of exposure through diet and lifestyle to certain dosha provoking factors, that dosha will become more important to address than your constitutional dosha. For example, you may have been more disposed to a Kapha nature, but eating Vata provoking foods and living a lifestyle that increases Vata may catalyze Vata to become more active in your body. Ayurvedic food and lifestyle practices seek to keep our Doshas balanced. For more insight about your constitution, Doshas, and Ayurvedic nutrition and lifestyle principles, book a consultation.

The essential theory to keep in mind when applying Ayurvedic principles is like increases like and opposites balance. Therapeutically, the application of an opposite element in the presence of an elevated one can help promote balance. Ayurveda utilizes a categorical system of qualities to help make these therapeutic assessments. Called Gunas, or qualities, they are listed as 20 pairs of opposites that can be used to describe all things in the manifest world. They are: Heavy/Light, Slow or Dull/Sharp, Cold/Hot, Oily/Dry, Slimy/Rough, Dilute/Dense, Soft/Hard, Subtle/Gross, Stable/Mobile, Clear/Cloudy. Simply put, if an Ayurvedic practitioner wants to decrease the amount of heaviness in the body, they should apply principles, foods and herbs that increase the amount of lightness.

"According to Ayurvedic principles, by understanding oneself, by identifying one's own constitution, and by recognizing sources of doshic aggravation, one can not only follow the proper guidelines to cleanse, purify, and prevent disease, but also uplift oneself into a realm of awareness previously unknown." - Dr. Vasant Lad
